Raven, once pitch black, was scorched by the sun’s flames

Long ago, the world lived in shadow. The sun had been hidden away by a jealous chief who feared its power. All creatures stumbled in darkness—until Raven, curious and cunning, grew tired of the gloom.

He transformed himself into a pine needle and floated down a stream where the chief’s daughter bathed. She swallowed the needle, and soon gave birth to a child—Raven reborn in human form.

As the child, Raven was clever and charming, and the chief grew fond of him. One day, the chief opened the great box that held the sun, just to show his grandson. That’s when Raven shed his human skin, seized the glowing orb, and soared through the smoke hole, bursting into the sky.

The light returned to the world, and every creature blinked against its brilliance. But Raven, once pitch black, was scorched by the sun’s flames—and his feathers were charred forever. Still, he laughed, for his trick had brought fire back to the earth.
