Mother Bear and the Circle of Protection

In the ancient forest where the trees whispered secrets to the wind and the rivers sang to the stones, there lived a mighty mother bear named Shakaya. Her fur was marked with sacred spirals and symbols—gifts from the Great Spirit—showing that she was chosen to guard the balance of life.

Shakaya was not alone. By her side, nestled safely within her strong embrace, were her three cubs—Little Storm, Quiet River, and Dancing Leaf. The cubs, like their mother, bore the swirling patterns of the earth and sky, signs that they too would one day protect the land.

One season, a great danger came to the forest. A cold wind blew from the north, carrying sickness that made trees wither and rivers run low. The animals grew afraid, and the people no longer heard the songs of the land. Seeing this, Shakaya gathered her cubs and walked to the heart of the forest, where the oldest cedar stood.

There, she formed a circle with her body, holding her cubs close. She sang a song of strength, her deep voice rising through the trees, calling upon the spirits of earth, water, fire, and air. The spirals on her fur glowed with ancient power, and the forest answered—rain fell gently to cleanse the sickness, the rivers flowed strong again, and the trees lifted their branches to the sun.

The people saw Shakaya’s courage and gave thanks, promising to protect the land as she had done. From that day on, they told the tale of Mother Bear and her cubs—their circle of protection, their song of life, and the lesson that true strength lies in love and unity.

And still today, when the wind rustles the forest, it carries Shakaya’s song, reminding all to honor the bond between family, land, and spirit.
