"Turtle Island’s Gift"

Long before the world was as we know it, when sky met water and land had not yet risen, the Great Spirit looked upon the deep and sent a vision of harmony to the animals of the water. The world needed balance—a place where trees could grow, rivers could run, and all beings could thrive together.

Among the water creatures, it was the Turtle who stepped forward. “I will carry the land,” she said. “Build your world upon my back.”

And so, with courage in her heart and strength in her shell, the Turtle rose from the depths. Upon her back, the land began to grow—lush forests, flowing streams, grassy hills, and even the creatures that would come to roam it: the bear, the eagle, the butterfly, and dragonfly. Life thrived, interconnected and sacred.

The people of the First Nations called this place Turtle Island—a name passed down in stories by firelight, in songs that rode the wind, and in the heartbeat of the drum.

Every creature on her back was part of a greater circle, bound by respect and responsibility. The eagle reminded the people to keep their eyes on the Creator. The bear taught strength and protection. The butterfly, change and renewal. The dragonfly, clarity and wisdom.

Water spirits danced in the sky as droplets, bringing life wherever they touched. The orcas swam nearby, guardians of the deep, carrying ancient knowledge in their songs.

But Turtle never asked for anything in return—only that her back be treated with care, her gift honored with gratitude.
And so, the people learned to walk gently, speak truthfully, and live with purpose. For as long as Turtle carries the world, it is their duty to protect what was given.

Even now, when you feel the earth beneath your feet, listen closely. The heartbeat of Turtle Island still echoes below—ancient, strong, and endlessly patient.
